Winter Slips and Falls


Falls are one of the leading causes of accidental injury. Occurrences are increased in the winter when there is snow and ice on the ground. There are many precautions that you can take to avoid injury and a trip to the hospital.

The first thing you can do is to remember to walk like a penguin!

Here are some more things to think about to avoid slips and falls on the snow and ice:

*Shovel and salt your driveway, sidewalk, and any walkways that you use at your house.

*Don't rush! Take slower, smaller steps.

*Wear boots or non-slip shoes. If you have to wear shoes without good traction, like dress shoes, wear your boots and then change shoes once you get to your destination.

*Use handrails when taking the stairs and plant your feet firmly on each step.

*Approach all surfaces with caution, even if they have been cleared. Watch out for "black ice" that can appear after snow and ice have melted and refrozen.

*Use extra caution when entering and exiting vehicles.

*Avoid carrying heavy items or any items at all. Your arms are a very important part of keeping yourself balanced. If your arms are full, it throws your balance off.

*Get as much snow and water off of your shoes when you enter a building. Watch out of any wet spots that may be on the floor.

*Be prepared to fall. If you do fall, don't use your hands or arms to catch yourself. This could result in broken bones. If you fall backwards, tuck your chin into your chest to avoid hitting your head on the ground.

If there's snow and ice on the ground, it's best to stay inside. If you can't avoid going out in it, take proper precautions so you don't become one of the millions of people who get injured from falling.
